چکیده

Constructing a sparse spanning subgraph is a fundamental primitive in graph theory. In this paper, we study this problem in the Centralized Local model, where the goal is to decide whether an edge is part of the spanning subgraph by examining only a small part of the input; yet, answers must be globally consistent and independent of prior queries. Unfortunately, maximally sparse spanning subgraphs, i.e., spanning trees, cannot be constructed efficiently in this model. Therefore, we settle for a spanning subgraph containing at most (1+ǫ)n edges (where n is the number of vertices and ǫ is a given approximation/sparsity parameter). We achieve query complexity of Õ(poly(∆/ε)n), where ∆ is the maximum degree of the input graph. Our algorithm is the first to do so on arbitrary graphs. Moreover, we achieve the additional property that our algorithm outputs a spanner, i.e., distances are approximately preserved. With high probability, for each deleted edge there is a path of O(poly(∆/ε) log n) hops in the output that connects its endpoints. MPI for informatics, Saarbrücken 66123, Germany. A Metaheuristic Algorithm for the Minimum Routing Cost Spanning Tree Problem

The routing cost of a spanning tree in a weighted and connected graph is defined as the total length of paths between all pairs of vertices. The objective of the minimum routing cost spanning tree problem is to find a spanning tree such that its routing cost is minimum. This is an NP-Hard problem that we present a GRASP with path-relinking metaheuristic algorithm for it. GRASP is a multi-start ...

SIMULATED ANNEALING ALGORITHM FOR SELECTING SUBOPTIMAL CYCLE BASIS OF A GRAPH

The cycle basis of a graph arises in a wide range of engineering problems and has a variety of applications. Minimal and optimal cycle bases reduce the time and memory required for most of such applications. One of the important applications of cycle basis in civil engineering is its use in the force method to frame analysis to generate sparse flexibility matrices, which is needed for optimal a...

SOLVING A STEP FIXED CHARGE TRANSPORTATION PROBLEM BY A SPANNING TREE-BASED MEMETIC ALGORITHM

In this paper, we consider the step fixed-charge transportation problem (FCTP) in which a step fixed cost, sometimes called a setup cost, is incurred if another related variable assumes a nonzero value. In order to solve the problem, two metaheuristic, a spanning tree-based genetic algorithm (GA) and a spanning tree-based memetic algorithm (MA), are developed for this NP-hard problem. For compa...

Constructing Near Spanning Trees with Few Local Inspections

Constructing a spanning tree of a graph is one of the most basic tasks in graph theory. Motivated by several recent studies of local graph algorithms, we consider the following variant of this problem. Let G be a connected bounded-degree graph. Given an edge e in G we would like to decide whether e belongs to a connected subgraph G consisting of (1 + ǫ)n edges (for a prespecified constant ǫ > 0...

Local Algorithms for Sparse Spanning Graphs

We initiate the study of the problem of designing sublinear-time (local) algorithms that, given an edge (u, v) in a connected graph G = (V,E), decide whether (u, v) belongs to a sparse spanning graph G′ = (V,E′) of G. Namely, G′ should be connected and |E′| should be upper bounded by (1 + )|V | for a given parameter > 0. To this end the algorithms may query the incidence relation of the graph G...
